Chester Visual Arts (CVA) is proud to present an exhibition with acclaimed British photographer Simon Roberts.  Coming this Spring from 20th May to 30th June, at the Grosvenor Shopping Centre in Chester, the exhibition showcases the latest works of Simon Roberts, a celebrated photographer known for his breathtaking captures of British landscapes, highlighting its diversity and richness, as well as its social and political dimensions.

The exhibition ‘How did we get here? / Where do we go now?’ offers a unique opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience this thought-provoking exhibition in the area, in a space outside the typical museum or gallery setting. The showcase will give visitors the opportunity to explore the current state of society and the world we live in through his works, and even presents the opportunity for the public to become part of the exhibition itself.

Composed of two parts; ‘How did we get here?’ showcases various works from Roberts spanning 15 years; exploring identity, belonging and the complex relationship between history, place, and culture. The second, ‘Where do we go now?’ allows visitors to participate in a series of workshops and open sessions where they are given the opportunity to respond to the current social climate, culminating in a new artwork piece (The Public Gallery), that will develop over the course of the exhibition.

Roberts’ works are a commentary on the social and political issues that we face in our daily lives, questioning the choices that have led us to where we are today.

Together, the two elements of the exhibition will act as a catalyst for open discussion about the function of the British High Street as the future use of urban spaces are increasingly debated.

Launched in 2016, Chester Visual Arts set a clear vision to bring world-class art to Chester, positioning the city and wider region as a leading cultural destination, creating a better place to live, work and visit.

This exhibition is the 5th show that CVA has brought to the city, which has provided refreshing art and discussions to the public and attracted over 50k visitors to date.

‘How did we get here? Where do we go now?’ promises to be a visual feast, showcasing some of Robert’s most breath-taking tableaux images that touch on prevalent and contentious issues, allowing audiences to explore diverse and complex ideas as it taps into social and economic issues, acting as a catalyst for important conversations, attracting art lovers from the region and the UK, whilst also bringing art to an audience who might not normally step into a typical museum space.

The exhibition will be held every Weds-Sunday from 11am-5pm at the previous H&M store within Grosvenor Shopping Centre in Chester, in a newly remodelled space that offers an immersive environment in the heart of the city.

You can get your tickets on Eventbrite here.

This exhibition is a free event, however, we greatly appreciate a donation of any amount you can, all of which goes towards supporting CVA and our mission to bring art to Chester and to secure a permanent home within the city, as a creative visual arts centre and public art gallery of international standing.

As a token of our appreciation, any donations of £5 or more, will receive a ‘How Did We Get Here? Where Do We Go Now? tote bag at the event as a thank-you gift.

Your support is greatly valued, and it will enable us to continue bringing amazing events and exhibitions to the region.
